Millions of consumers in the United States may be eligible to receive payments from a settlement agreement that is being sought worth $167.5 million involving Visa and Mastercard ATM surcharges that occurred over a period from 2007 through to 2026. The settlement comes out of a lawsuit claiming that regulations in the networks stopped independent ATM operators from offering lower fees on competing networks. Visa and Mastercard have denied any wrongdoing.

Who can claim the Visa Mastercard ATM settlement?

The national settlement will include consumers across the US who paid a fee for withdrawing cash from their deposit accounts via an ATM or PIN debit card at a standalone ATM from October 24, 2007, through August 14, 2026, provided that they have not been reimbursed for the fee in full by their banks. Standalone ATMs are those which are not owned by Visa, MasterCard, any bank or other financial institution.

The official settlement notice also identifies: “You may also be included as part of the Statewide Classes for California, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Michigan,” reported The Sun. Credit-card transactions, cash advances and prepaid-card transactions are excluded.

How much could you receive?

The Visa contribution will be around $88.8 million, while that of Mastercard is $78.7 million; hence, the settlement fund will be worth approximately $167.5 million. At present, there is no specific payment amount for individual claims since it will depend on the total claims received minus other allowable deductions such as attorneys' fees, administration costs and other permitted payments.
