Virgin Galactic, the spaceflight company, accomplished its second commercial spaceflight named Galactic 02. The flight marked a milestone as it carried its inaugural group of private-paying tourists. Departing from Spaceport America in New Mexico, the spacecraft was piloted by CJ Sturckow and Kelly Latimer. Accompanying them were four others: Beth Moses, the chief astronaut trainer overseeing the mission, and a trio of passengers.

Galactic 02’s Passengers

Among the three customers on Galactic 02 were former British Olympian Jon Goodwin, along with Caribbean passengers, Keisha Schahaff and Anastatia Mayers. These individuals secured their seats through a charity fundraising drawing organized by nonprofit Space for Humanity.

The Flight

The flight's trajectory reached an altitude surpassing 80 kilometers or approximately 262,000 feet, which the United States designates as the boundary of space. The return to Earth occurred at Spaceport America, successfully concluding the flight.

Road Ahead

This mission marked Virgin Galactic's seventh venture into space and its third since May. The company's objective is to maintain a monthly spaceflight rate using spacecraft VSS Unity. Furthermore, they are actively working on developing a fleet of spacecraft, referred to as "Delta-class," set to debut in 2026 and operate on a weekly basis.

Virgin Galactic employs a "air launch" two-step method for suborbital spaceflights, offering customers a brief period of weightlessness. Virgin Galactic's CEO, Michael Colglazier, addressed concerns about extreme tourism experiences during the company's second-quarter earnings call. Despite the tragic Titan submersible incident earlier in the year, Colglazier noted that Virgin Galactic customers did not exhibit any negative reactions.
