Seven FDNY firefighters injured after a car explosion in the Bronx sends a towering fireball into the night sky
Firefighters were responding to a fire in front of a building between Intervale Avenue and Kelly Street around 7:06 pm when the car suddenly erupted into flames. Chief of Department John Esposito described the moment as a “large fireball” that engulfed the scene shortly after the first responders arrived.
“There was a lot of garbage and debris on the sidewalk that was on fire. There were a couple of cars on fire. And shortly after we arrived on the scene, there was some sort of explosion, a large fireball,” Chief of Department John Esposito said at a news conference, according to the New York Post website.
Five of the seven injured firefighters sustained burns to their hands and faces, though officials described the injuries as serious but not life-threatening. Chief John Esposito confirmed that all are “awake, alert and speaking,”while Dr. Sheldon Temperman of Jacobi Hospital said he remains “worried” but expects the first responders to recover from their injuries.
“I’ll be worried until they’re all home, but we do expect that they will recover from their injuries,” Temperman told reporters.
