Ashton Kutcher is finally putting an end to one of Hollywood’s strangest rumors. Years after a casual podcast conversation sparked viral jokes about his hygiene, the actor says the story spun far beyond reality. Now, he’s addressing it head-on, and with humor intact.

How did the shower rumors start?

The confusion traces back to July 2021, when Mila Kunis appeared on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast. During the conversation, Kunis spoke candidly about parenting choices, saying, “When I had children, I also didn’t wash them every day. I wasn’t that parent that bathed my newborns — ever.”

Kutcher added his own perspective at the time, explaining, “Now, here’s the thing: If you can see the dirt on them, clean them. Otherwise, there’s no point.” The relaxed tone of the discussion quickly went viral, with snippets shared widely and stripped of context, fueling speculation about the couple’s personal hygiene, as per a report by The New York Post.

What is Ashton Kutcher saying now?

Four years later, Kutcher says the reaction still surprises him. Speaking to People magazine this week, the 47-year-old called the episode “the craziest thing of all time.”

“We made a comment at one point, and people were like, ‘Does he stink? Does he smell?'” Kutcher said. Reflecting on how a single podcast moment spiraled, he added, “There was a comment on a podcast, so long ago… and people are like, ‘They don’t shower.’ I’m like, ‘I shower, I go to the gym, I shower.’”

While chatting with costars Anthony Ramos and Jeremy Pope, Kutcher made it clear the rumors never matched reality. Ramos jumped in with a laugh, saying, “I can confirm my boy showers," as per a report by The New York Post.

What did Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis actually say in 2021?

During the original podcast discussion, Kutcher openly described his routine, saying that he washes only certain parts of his body daily and nothing else. “I got a bar of Lever 2000 that delivers every time. Nothing else."

He also noted, “I do have a tendency to throw some water on my face after a workout to get all the salts out.” Kunis added that she washes her face “twice a day.”

Though meant as a lighthearted exchange, the comments quickly became internet shorthand for something far more extreme, with many assuming the couple avoided bathing altogether, as per a report by The New York Post.

How did the couple respond to the backlash?

Rather than issuing a serious correction, Kutcher and Kunis chose humor. Weeks after the podcast went viral, the couple posted a TikTok poking fun at the misunderstanding.

Standing in their bathroom with the bath running, Kunis tells Kutcher, “It’s water.” Kutcher, filming the moment, responds dramatically, “You’re putting water on the children? Are you trying to melt them? Are you trying to injure them with water? This is ridiculous. What’s going on?”

“We’re bathing our children,” Kunis replies.

“That’s like the fourth time this week! Four times this week! Their body oils are going to be destroyed! What are you trying to do!” Kutcher yells sarcastically, as Kunis jokingly agrees, “It’s too much.”

The video made clear that the couple was well aware of the rumors—and comfortable laughing them off.
