To burnish Netflix's arthouse credentials, Netflix enters several films at this year's Venice Film Festival, including Adam Driver's opening film 'White Noise.'

After the critical acclaim of 'Marriage Story', Adam Driver is back with 'White Noise'. In this movie, he plays a role of a professor in a community who is undergoing an experience of 'Toxic Airborne Event.'

During the second week of the 11-day festival, Netflix has also planned to release the eagerly awaited movie 'Blonde,' which is a grim dramatic take on Marilyn Monroe's tough life.


Its Australian director Andrew Dominik described it as "a masterpiece" with his customary modesty, and it has the potential to elevate Cuban actress Ana de Armas from a rising star to a legitimate A-lister.

The latest film by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, a Mexican director who also launched his earlier works 'The Revenant' and 'Birdman' at Venice before winning Oscars, is 'Bardo'. It is also supported by the global streaming service Netflix.

The beach-lined Lido island hosts the longest-reigning film festival, now in its 79th iteration.

It is a good moment to start Oscar campaigning for directors with a particularly excellent track record in recent years.

Eight of the past ten Best Director Oscars have been awarded to the films with their world premieres at Venice. It also includes Jane Campion, the most recent winner for 'Power of the Dog,' another Netflix production. However, the global streaming service, Netflix, is still waiting for its first Best Picture trophy at this annual Hollywood awards.

What is expected at Venice Film Festival?
A lifetime accomplishment award will also be presented to French actress Catherine Deneuve at the Lido.

One of the other eagerly anticipated entries is 'Bones and All,' which stars man-of-the-moment Timothee Chalamet, the popular actor, as a love-struck cannibal on a road trip across America. With the director of "Call Me By Your Name," Luca Guadagnino, he is reunited.

The movie 'The Whale,' which features Brendan Fraser as an obese father trying to get back in touch with his daughter, is also getting some early buzz. Since his heyday in films like 'The Mummy' twenty years ago, Brendan Fraser has largely disappeared from the big screen.

A year after winning the Golden Lion for 'The Wrestler,' the film's director, Darren Aronofsky, premiered 'Black Swan' in Venice.

America and Western Europe are heavily represented in the 23 films vying for the jury's attention, chaired by American actress Julianne Moore.

One notable exception is the award-winning Iranian director Jafar Panahi, whose film "No Bears" opened just one month after Panahi was detained in Tehran as part of a campaign against opposition filmmakers.
