In a prisoner swap, Venezuela has freed seven imprisoned Americans. Five oil executives were among the Americans who were held captive for more than five years. The White House said that the man's health was stable and that a range of support services, including medical care, had been provided.

The Americans were detained for nearly five years. They were exchanged following months of covert negotiations by Washington's top hostage negotiator and other US officials. The negotiations included discussions with a major oil producer that gained speed after sanctions on Russia placed a strain on international energy costs.

The guys were in stable health, the White House reported, and a variety of support services, including medical attention, had been offered. US President Joe Biden has spoken with the families.


According to a senior Biden administration official, the release of the two family members of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was necessary for a compromise to be reached after the US and Venezuela had looked into several options. The deal, the insider claimed, required a "difficult decision," but the administration's readiness to make it demonstrated its dedication to returning American nationals detained abroad.
