Vegan influencer Zhanna D’Art’s death: Nutritionist declares ‘you can’t survive on fruits’, warns influencers against promoting misleading eating habits
According to Dr. Rebecca Reynolds, a nutritionist based in Sydney, if Zhanna Samsonova's diet indeed comprised solely of "fruits, sunflower seed sprouts, fruit smoothies, and juices," there is no question that she would have eventually faced serio...

In an interview with news.com. au, Dr. Rebecca Reynolds, a nutritionist based in Sydney, concurred with this perspective, pointing out that Zhanna Samsonova's exclusively fruit and seed sprout-based diet could have been perilous. Dr. Reynolds highlighted that a diet lacking various essential food groups would necessitate supplementation. Therefore, if Samsonova had not been taking the necessary supplements, it was highly likely that her health would have deteriorated significantly.
Zhanna Samsonova, a 39-year-old Russian national and a social media sensation with millions of followers across platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram, resided in Malaysia at the time of her passing.
Reynolds told news.com.au, “You can’t survive on fruit and sunflower seed sprouts (a vegetable).”
Samsonova, an advocate for consuming raw fruits and vegetables, asserted that she followed a "fully raw vegan diet" during the final four years of her life.
Reynolds countered the notion that Samsonova's vegan diet bore sole responsibility, proposing that the main contributing factor was probably her avoidance of all five essential food groups.
Dr. Rebecca Reynolds, a nutritionist, explained that excluding entire food groups from one's diet can lead to nutrient deficiencies. She noted that while omitting specific foods is possible for ethical reasons, extreme restrictions like only eating fruits and one vegetable item can be detrimental. Mental health, particularly the condition orthorexia nervosa, might have played a role in the tragic death of Zhanna Samsonova, who followed an extreme diet. Orthorexia involves an obsessive focus on a "clean" diet, leading to mental and physical consequences. Dr. Reynolds also warned against online influencers promoting misleading eating habits. She mentioned a potential link between veganism/vegetarianism and orthorexia, urging parents to be attentive to their children's dietary choices.
Despite the possible negative aspects of Samsonova's dietary approach, numerous loyal followers remain unconvinced that her eating habits played a role in her passing. Instead, they contend that chemicals present in the fruit she consumed are responsible for her demise.
As her family awaits the release of a medical report and an official death certificate, these documents will provide clarity regarding the exact cause of her death.
