The president of the University of Virginia, James Ryan, has told the college's board that he will step down from his position, following pressure from the Trump administration over UVA’s diversity, equity, and inclusion policies, as per a report.

James Ryan Steps Down

He was under political pressure from the US president Donald Trump's administration to resign, as they wanted to resolve a Justice Department probe into the institution's diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, and had already urged the university to remove him from his role, according to The New York Times report.


University of Virginia President Known for DEI Leadership

According to The Guardian report, Ryan, who was hired as the university's president in 2018, was known for pushing to make the University of Virginia campus more diverse and used to encourage students to perform community service. Prior to being the university's president, he had also served as the dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where he received recognition for his commitment to DEI programmes, as reported by Fox News Digital report.

Pressure from Washington

The US Justice Department has argued that Ryan had not discarded the University of Virginia's diversity, equity and inclusion programmes and misrepresented the steps taken to remove them, amid the Trump administration's efforts to roll out DEI in higher education, as per The New York Times report.

A Difficult Goodbye

According to New York Times' sources, Ryan sent a letter on Thursday to the head of the board overseeing the university, saying that he had planned to step down at the end of the next academic year, but “given the circumstances and today’s conversations”, he had decided, “with deep sadness,” as quoted in the report.

The University of Virginia’s board has accepted his resignation, as per The New York Times' insider. However, it is not known when Ryan would leave his post, he said in his letter to the head of the board that his resignation could be effective immediately but “no later than Aug. 15, 2025,” according to The New York Times report.

Trump Administration's Crackdown on Higher Education

This comes amid the Trump administration's moves that are targeting higher education, which include pulling billions of dollars from elite universities such as Harvard, as it has been the subject of investigations by at least six different federal agencies over issues such as DEI initiatives, admissions practices and alleged antisemitism on campus, according to the Fox Digital News report.
