US winter storm: Warnings issued for North Carolina and Virginia with up to 7 inches of snow expected

A winter storm is expected to bring heavy snowfall and hazardous conditions to northeastern North Carolina and parts of Virginia, with warnings and advisories in effect from early Tuesday morning. The severe weather has led to school closures and travel disruptions.

School closures and delays for Tuesday

In Franklin City, public schools will close two hours early, and all after-school activities will be cancelled.

In Gloucester County, schools will operate remotely. Students from Pre-K to Year 5 will receive learning packets, while students from Years 6 to 12 will complete assignments on Canvas.


Schools in Mathews County will be closed, and all activities and events have been cancelled, according to reports.

Government offices in New Kent County will be closed. Similarly, schools will remain closed for both students and staff, and all school activities have been cancelled.

In Northampton County (Virginia), schools will observe a virtual/asynchronous learning day. Schools, offices and all work sites will open at 8 am.

Meanwhile, in Northampton County (North Carolina), schools will operate on a two-hour delay.

In Southampton County, schools will also operate on a two-hour delay, reports indicate.

In Surry County, Sussex County, and Williamsburg/James City County, schools will remain closed. All activities, including the Science Fair at James City, have been cancelled.

Weather warnings

A winter storm warning is in effect for Accomack County on the Eastern Shore from midday Tuesday until 10 am Wednesday, with four to seven inches of heavy, wet snow predicted.

New Kent, Middlesex, eastern King William, and eastern King and Queen counties are also under a winter storm warning from 9 am Tuesday until 10 am Wednesday, with two to four inches of snow and ice accumulations of up to one-tenth of an inch expected.

A winter weather alert is in place for several counties, including Northampton, Brunswick, Prince George, Greensville, Sussex, Surry, Southampton, Charles City, Gloucester, Mathews, James City, Northampton (Virginia), and York. Snow and sleet accumulations could reach two inches, while ice accumulations could be up to one-tenth of an inch. The advisory will remain in effect from 9 am Tuesday until 9 am Wednesday.
