Though spring officially arrives on Tuesday, March 19, more than 25 million people in 11 states from Texas to North Carolina have been warned of cold waves and sub-zero temperatures, reports Fox Weather. At a time when nearly 170 million people are already shivering in plummeting temperatures, they may further face snow squalls and lake-effect snow. This condition may prevail in vast areas from the Great Lakes to the interior Northeast and the northern and central Appalachians in the coming days, with no respite in sight.

Seasonal Snowfall

The seasonal snowfall has ranged from 22% in Boston to 27% in New York City, 32% in Minneapolis and 59% in Chicago. But, waves of cold air are likely to flow from central Canada to the Midwest and the Northeast states.

According to AccuWeather, snow may be in the air downwind of the Great Lakes, it will be more limited in the central and northern Appalachians.


Freeze Warning

NOAA's Weather Prediction Center has already issued a Freeze Warning for Little Rock in Arkansas, Memphis in Tennessee, Tupelo, Starkville, Jackson and Hattiesburg in Mississippi. Besides the people of Huntsville, Birmingham and Montgomery in Alabama, Atlanta and Griffin in Georgia, Anderson in South Carolina and Charlotte in North Carolina also have been warned of freezing temperatures.

Freeze Watches

Besides, NOAA's Weather Prediction Center has also issued Freeze Watches for large swathes of central Louisiana, southeastern Alabama and southwestern Georgia.

Meanwhile, the cold air will continue to blow farther to the south and east and freezing temperatures may reach the Southeast on Tuesday.
