As a result of a $500 million superyacht moored in one of the city's harbors, the US has warned Hong Kong against becoming a 'haven' for sanctioned oligarchs. After heading for Vietnam, the yacht Nord, believed to belong to Russia's third richest person, Alexei Mordashov, was docked in Hong Kong.

According to the US government, China's reputation as a financial centre depends on the adherence to international laws and standards for assets flying the Russian flag. A US state department spokesperson told the Financial Times that Hong Kong could be used as a haven by individuals evading sanctions from multiple jurisdictions.

The move will leave some 400 of the well-armed, heavy-duty Chinooks out of service owing to what engine-maker Honeywell described as "suspect O-rings" used in some of the aircraft that did not meet its specifications.

Hong Kong's marine department is unlikely to sanction Mordashov and other oligarchs, a spokesperson told the Financial Times on Friday. According to the spokesperson, certain countries may impose unilateral sanctions on certain places based on their own considerations.

Mordashov's yacht and villa in Sardinia, worth $116 million, have been seized by Italy, according to Reuters. The US, the UK, and the EU sanctioned Mordashov after Putin ordered Russian troops into Ukraine.
