US stockpiles bird flu vaccines amid rising cases – Is a pandemic looming?
Bird flu cases are increasing in the US, with two more hospitalisations reported in Wyoming and Ohio. While no human-to-human transmission has been detected, experts warn of potential mutation risks. The US is stockpiling vaccines, monitoring out...

Since April 2023, nearly 70 cases of bird flu have been reported in the US, resulting in one fatality. Since January 2024, three people have been hospitalised due to bird flu, including an elderly person who died in Louisiana.
While there is currently no evidence of human-to-human transmission, experts believe that early vaccination could help prevent further spread from animals to humans.
Bird flu vaccines ready but not yet deployed
The US government has prepared around 10 million doses of a bird flu vaccine expected to be effective against the H5N1 strain. However, officials have opted not to distribute it yet, as most previous cases have presented with mild symptoms, such as eye irritation and flu-like illness.Health experts say that vaccinating high-risk populations, such as farmworkers, could significantly reduce the likelihood of the virus spreading from animals to humans.
According to Dr Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, limiting transmission at this stage is crucial to prevent the virus from mutating and potentially becoming more contagious among humans.

Political challenges
The current political climate in the US is also influencing public health preparedness. Last week, the Donald Trump administration issued an executive order restricting federal funding for COVID-19 vaccine mandates in schools. This move has heightened concerns about government-backed vaccination programmes, potentially hindering efforts to roll out a bird flu vaccine if necessary.Additionally, health agencies such as the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have faced staffing and funding cuts. Dr Offit warns that these reductions could severely impact disease surveillance and pandemic response efforts.
Preventive measures and vaccine development
For now, US health officials have launched a vaccination drive for farmworkers using seasonal flu jabs, which do not directly protect against H5N1 but may reduce the risk of co-infection with other flu strains. Existing antiviral treatments, such as Tamiflu, have also been effective in treating bird flu cases.Pharmaceutical company Moderna is developing a bird flu vaccine for humans, backed by $766 million in funding from the US government. The company recently announced plans to advance its experimental mRNA-1018 vaccine into late-stage trials, raising hopes for stronger protection against future outbreaks.
