According to Ellen Langer, a Psychology Professor at Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the study's author, "The more mindful we are, the less stress we experience, and the happier we will be."
Happiest States of the United States Ranked
Utah secures the top spot in the rankings as the happiest state, boasting a total score of 69.79. This high score is attributed to its excellent work and community environment. Hawaii follows closely behind with a score of 66.42, leading the nation in Emotional & Physical Well-Being. The top ten states in terms of happiness also include Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, Connecticut, California, Florida, Idaho, and Nebraska.
Unhappiest States of the United States Ranked
On the other end of the spectrum, West Virginia holds the title for the unhappiest state, with a meager score of 35. It also emerges as the most depressed state in the United States, scoring poorly in sleep rates. States ranking as the least happy, from 40th to 49th place, include Indiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Alaska, Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Louisiana.
Ellen Langer suggests that regardless of location, happiness can be achieved through mindfulness and feeling supported and cared for by those around you.
Least and Most Depressed US States
When it comes to depression, the states with the lowest rates are Hawaii, Florida, California, Maryland, and South Dakota. In contrast, the most depressed states include Arkansas, Tennessee, Vermont, Kentucky, and West Virginia.

New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Maryland, and Connecticut report the lowest number of suicide cases. In contrast, South Dakota, New Mexico, Alaska, Montana, and Wyoming report the highest number of suicide cases.
