What was the US military aircraft doing off Mexico’s coast?

Flight tracking data showed a US Navy P-8 Poseidon aircraft conducting surveillance and reconnaissance missions off the coast of Mexico near Tijuana, just south of California. The aircraft launched from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Washington, as per a report by the Express.

It flew south over Oregon and California before looping several times off Southern California and Mexico’s coastline. The aircraft later returned to its base. The P-8 is commonly used to monitor suspicious maritime activity, with sensors capable of detecting both surface and underwater targets.

Where exactly did the jet operate?

The aircraft was observed flying off the Southern California coast toward Baja California and Ensenada. Its flight path covered territorial waters and exclusive economic zones near San Diego and Tijuana, extending roughly 352 miles west into the Pacific Ocean, as per a report by the Express.

The repeated loops drew attention online, particularly as tensions rise between Washington and Mexico over drug trafficking and border security.

Is the flight linked to Trump’s threats against Mexico?

It remains unclear whether the deployment was directly related to President Trump’s recent remarks. However, the timing has raised eyebrows. Trump has repeatedly accused Mexican drug cartels of effectively controlling the country.

“The cartels are running Mexico, whether you like it or not. It's not nice to say, but the cartels are running Mexico,” Trump said, as per a report by the Express.

What has Trump said about possible military action?

Trump suggested that military action similar to recent operations in Venezuela could be considered if Mexico fails to crack down on drug trafficking. In November, he warned Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to take stronger action or face potential US intervention.

"Would I launch strikes in Mexico to stop drugs? It's OK with me. Whatever we have to do to stop drugs. I didn't say I'm doing it, but I'd be proud to do it. Because we're going to save millions of lives by doing it," Trump said, as per a report by The Express.
