The United States Space Force is preparing for a surge in launch activity from Florida’s Space Coast, with projections for 2025 reaching up to 156 launches. This would mark a big jump from the 93 launches in 2024. However, sustaining these many launches is posing logistical and infrastructure challenges.

Brigadier General Kristin Panzenhagen, who oversees Space Launch Delta 45 and the Eastern Range, said that launch activity has been rising consistently by 25-30% annually, reported the Orlando Sentinel. While speaking at the Space Mobility Conference in Orlando, she added that this upward trend is likely to persist for the next few years.

Strain on operations and infrastructure

Panzenhagen said that the increasing launch frequency is driving innovation, leading to automation, process reevaluation and operational streamlining, but does continue to put pressure on manpower and operational pace. One major concern is the lack of adequate payload processing facilities. Both government and commercial payloads are currently competing for the same facilities, a challenge exacerbated by the increasing size and complexity of modern payloads.

Limited launch sites adding pressure

In addition to payload processing constraints, real estate for new launch sites is becoming scarce. Panzenhagen stated that the commercial launch industry is thriving, innovative, and expanding. However, due to this growth, there isn’t enough space to accommodate every company that needs a launch pad for their rockets.

The Space Coast is already home to multiple launch providers, including SpaceX, United Launch Alliance (ULA), and Blue Origin.

Balancing national security and commercial growth

The Space Force must balance its main responsibility of ensuring national security with the goal of supporting a competitive commercial space sector. Panzenhagen stated while its top priority is addressing current and future security needs, it also focuses on ensuring a strong, innovative and competitive commercial launch industry.
