Soybean crisis in US

US soybean farmers crisis: American soybean farmers are facing a crisis like never before as harvest season nears, with no orders coming from China, historically their biggest buyer, as per a report.

No Chinese Orders Threaten US Soybean Growers

Caleb Ragland, president of the American Soybean Association and a ninth-generation farmer from Kentucky, warned about the devastating impact on the nation’s 500,000 soybean growers, as per a Fortune report.

In a TikTok video that has gained national attention, Ragland described the situation as “very dire,” stressing how critical China’s demand is for US soybeans growers, according to the report.

China’s Critical Role in US Soybean Market

During a CNN interview, he said that, “China takes more of our soybeans than all other foreign customers combined,” and pointed out that China accounts for about 25% of total US soybean purchases, and roughly half of all soybeans grown in the US are exported globally, as reported by Fortune.

The current absence of Chinese orders is a sharp break from usual patterns. Normally, by this time in the season, about one-third of annual soybean sales to China, equivalent to 8%-9% of the entire US crop, would already be booked, according to the report. But this year, that figure stands at zero, leaving farmers like Ragland facing a financial nightmare.

Falling Soybean Prices and Rising Costs Deepen Farmers’ Woes

Soybean prices have plummeted 40% compared to three years ago, while production costs and interest rates continue to climb, as per Fortune. Ragland revealed that his own farm is currently losing $750,000 and that he’s relying on loans to get by, according to the report.

Ragland said, “Right now we’re planting a crop that looks like it will be produced at a loss,” adding, “By fall, when the soybeans are harvested and ready to sell, we’re gonna need a drastic improvement in our markets or it’s gonna get even tougher for farm families all across this country,” as quoted by CNN.

Economic Impact On US Agriculture

The financial strain is not just on individual farms as agriculture as a whole contributes $9.5 trillion annually to the US economy, representing nearly 19% of the country’s total output, and supports over a million jobs, as per the Fortune report.

Soybean exports alone create more than 231,000 jobs across farming, manufacturing, transportation, and related sectors, as per the report. Ragland highlighted how the crisis is already rippling through rural communities, small businesses, and local infrastructure, as per the Fortune report.

US-China Trade Tensions and Tariffs Fuel the Crisis

This crisis stems from ongoing trade tensions between the US and China. American soybeans now face a combined 34% tariff rate, giving South American competitors, particularly Brazil, a major advantage, as per Fortune. In 2024, China sourced 71% of its soybeans from Brazil, a figure that is only growing, with Brazil’s exports to China reaching record levels in early 2025, according to the report.
