US Senator Pat Toomey has claimed that "1984 is one of the darkest years of Indian history". On October 31, 1984, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was murdered by her Sikh bodyguards. Subsequently, an anti-Sikh riot broke out in Delhi and other areas, according to reports.

Everybody in the world was aware of what was going on in India and it was one of the darkest years in the nation's history, Senator Toomey alleged.
