US: Rapper Big Pokey dies after collapsing on stage during his Texas show

American rapper Big Pokey, also known as Milton Powell, passed away on Sunday, June 18, 2023, a day after he collapsed on stage during a show in Beaumont, Texas. He was 45. The rapper had been admitted to hospital on Saturday, June 17, after he collapsed on stage and fell backwards. Big Pokey was appearing at an event in Beaumont when he collapsed and people thought he had fainted. The singer died in hospital the next day.


A video on social media shows Big Pokey falling backwards, as people present at the concert rushed to him, and paramedics performed CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) on him at the Pour09 Bar.

Who was Big Pokey?

Rapper Big Pokey was a member of Screwed Up Click, an important hip-hop group based in Houston. The late George Floyd was also reportedly a part of this collective.

In a statement following his death, Big Pokey’s spokesperson posted on his Instagram account that the singer was "well-loved by his family, his friends, and his loyal fans". "Big Pokey will forever be 'The Hardest Pit In The Litter!'," the statement added, as a reference to the rapper’s debut album title.
