US President Joe Biden pressed railways and unions last month to achieve an agreement before a mid-September deadline. However, railroaders rejected the deal and the possibility of a strike has been reinstated.

The third largest railroad union in the United States rejected an agreement with employers on Monday, raising the prospect of a crippling strike. Before that happens, both parties will return to the negotiation table.

Despite a 24% increase and $5,000 in incentives, more than half of rail maintenance employees represented by the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Division voted to oppose the five-year deal offered by employers.

Tony Cardwell, the Union President, said the railways didn't do much to address the shortage of paid time off, particularly sick leave, and working conditions after the Central railroads cut roughly one-third of their positions in the last six years.

Cardwell also added that railroad workers are dissatisfied with their working conditions and pay and hold their company in poor esteem. They hate that management has little respect for their quality of life, as seen by their steadfast refusal to grant more paid time off, particularly for illness.
