US Presidential Election 2024: VP Kamala Harris emerges as the front runner to replace Joe Biden

US Vice-President Kamala Harris is considered to be the best candidate among the Democrats to replace President Joe Biden, if the party decides to deny an official nomination to him. In recent times, the cognitive health of the US President, his abysmal performance in the first US Presidential debate and his overall approval ratings have the Democrats worried. A recent survey also indicated that she is just trailing Donald Trump by 1%. However, Joe Biden continues to enjoy the support of the Democrats and it may not be easy replacing him. This survey has been conducted by Reuters/Ipsos.

Kamala Harris:

The incumbent Vice-President may be the perfect candidate to replace Biden for these four reasons. Firstly, she finds support among large sections of women and people of color who are considered to be the core supporters of the Democrats. Secondly, she has held administrative positions in California and in Washington and has the required political acumen and administrative capabilities to steer the Democrats towards securing a victory.


Thirdly, she can outperform Trump in various debates and still has the time to build support for her candidature. Lastly, many believe that Biden’s supporters within the Democrats will support her candidature. The two contested the elections together in 2020.

Challenges:

Legally, replacing Biden may be an uphill task for the Democrats considering the stringent rules. He has won the primaries and has the support of the Democrats. Another challenge will be to convince the voters who see her as part of Biden’s team and may find it difficult to vote for someone whose performance may have not been up to the mark.
