US President Joe Biden makes alarming remarks in doomsday address. This is what he said

Joe Biden, the United States President, said while speaking at a fund-raising event for the Democratic Party in New York that Russian President Vladimir Putin is "not kidding" about deploying nuclear weapons in response to his troubles in Ukraine.

According to US President Joe Biden, the current standoff with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin is analogous to when the world was approaching a nuclear holocaust.

The biggest threat since Cuban missile crisis

Biden's assertion that this poses the greatest threat of a nuclear exchange since the Cuban missile crisis in 1962 is essential. He also noted that Putin was "not joking" about using nuclear weapons amid war in Ukraine, which he had started on February 24.

Biden said that he disagreed with the White House's assessment that Putin's warnings amount to little more than "saber-rattling."

Armageddon would occur even if just tactical nuclear weapons were utilised, the US President remarked.

According to Biden, Putin's statements have been called "bluster" by some, but the real threat posed by nuclear weapons is universally recognised. Thus, they are painted with a brush of genuine concern.

The military under Putin "significantly underperforms”, the US President also said.

Does Vladimir Putin's alert change risk of nuclear war?

Russian President Vladimir Putin's implied threat to turn the Ukraine war into a broader nuclear conflict is a very rare one. In fact it was rarely heard even during the Cold War period, when vastly larger nuclear arsenals of the United States and the former Soviet Union threatened the world with nuclear Armageddon.

The United States and Russia have the two largest nuclear arsenals in the world, by far. They include weapons that can be delivered by aircraft, submarine and land-based ballistic missiles. In both countries, the president has sole authority to order a nuclear strike. US officials indicated they did not know what Putin intended when he said that, AP reported.

But what does Putin mean by putting nuclear weapons on alert? According to U.S. nuclear doctrine, the weapons' alert level is central to their role in deterring attack. The idea is that being prepared to respond on short notice makes an enemy less likely to attack in the first place and risk retaliation that would do incalculable damage.

A counterargument is that having ICBMs, which the Pentagon calls the most responsive portion of its nuclear arsenal, on high alert during a crisis compresses a president's decision-making room and leaves open the possibility of ordering them launched in response to a false alarm. The 400 deployed U.S. ICBMs are armed at all times.

Some arms control experts have argued for taking ICBMs off high alert by separating the missiles from their nuclear warheads. But in a crisis, perhaps like the one implied by Putin's alert order, a decision to re-arm the missiles would be taken as an escalatory move that could make the crisis even worse. There is no evidence, however, that the Biden administration has reciprocated in any sense to Putin's announcement.

Given the recent victories achieved by the Ukrainian army, Biden noted, it is not strange that President Biden would state that the Russian military "is badly underperforming."

As the Ukraine crisis continues, the United States is "trying to figure out" Putin's departure plan, he revealed.

The war that Putin has launched against Ukraine is not going well, and their effort to oust Volodymyr Zelensky's government has been thwarted. Putin called the war a "special operation" in propaganda to sell it to the public at home.
