The US Open enters its third round on Friday, headlined by former champions Aryna Sabalenka, Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Emma Raducanu. Defending champion Sabalenka will face a familiar foe in Leylah Fernandez, the Canadian who stunned her in the 2021 semifinals en route to the final. At that time, Sabalenka appeared poised for her maiden major after top seed Ashleigh Barty’s early exit, but Fernandez halted her run before losing to Raducanu. Since then, Sabalenka has established herself as one of the most dominant forces in women’s tennis, claiming three Grand Slam titles, though she has yet to avenge that painful defeat till date.

On the men’s side, World No. 2 and former champion Alcaraz takes on Italy’s Luciano Darderi in the third round while Djokovic remains in pursuit of a record 25th Grand Slam. The Serbian great overcame a spirited challenge from American Zachary Svajda in round two, dropping the opening set before recovering in four. His consistency and experience keep him a leading favorite in New York. Raducanu, meanwhile, is showing glimpses of the form that carried her to a historic US Open triumph in 2021. The Brit has cruised through her first two matches, conceding just six games in total, and now seeks to build momentum as she aims to re-establish herself on the big stage.
