Defending champion Jannik Sinner continues his US Open 2025 campaign on Thursday, taking on Australia’s Alexei Popyrin in the second round at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York. The world number one began his title defence in commanding fashion, dispatching Vit Kopriva in straight sets to underline his status as the man to beat in this year’s draw.

In the women’s singles, second seed Iga Swiatek will meet Dutch qualifier Suzan Lamens after a dominant opening-round performance. The 24-year-old world number two dropped only three games in her victory over Emiliana Arango, extending her remarkable streak of consecutive opening-round wins at WTA events to 65.

Third seed Coco Gauff also booked her place in the second round, though in far less straightforward fashion. The 2023 US Open champion struggled with her serve, committing 10 double faults in a hard-fought win over Ajla Tomljanovic. Gauff recently split with coach Matthew Daly ahead of the tournament and turned to Gavin MacMillan, former serving coach of Aryna Sabalenka, to address her serve mechanics.
