White House ordered US National Archives to release thousands of Government documents related to the murder of US President John F Kennedy in full for the first time. With the publication of some 13,173 files online, the White House said more than 97 per cent of records in the collection were now publicly available.

The release of documents are not expected to change the course of history, but it will be useful for historians focusing on the events around the assassination. And for many, releasing all of the remaining documents is about restoring faith in the functioning of the Government.

The White house said in memorandum, “All Government records concerning the assassination of President John F. Kennedy should be eventually disclosed to enable the public to become fully informed about the history surrounding the assassination.”

They further stated “The profound national tragedy of President Kennedy’s assassination continues to resonate in American history and in the memories of so many Americans who were alive on that terrible day; meanwhile, the need to protect records concerning the assassination has weakened with the passage of time.” “It is therefore critical to ensure that the United States Government maximizes transparency by disclosing all information in records concerning the assassination, except when the strongest possible reasons counsel otherwise.”
