US Midterm Poll favors Democrats, but Republicans hold a $103 million advantage that could change the race

The Republican National Committee closed out August with roughly $125.6 million in cash on hand. By comparison, the Democratic National Committee reported about $16.9 million in available cash and was carrying another $17.6 million in debt.

US Midterm Poll favors Democrats, but Republicans hold a $103 million advantage that could change the race

Republicans may be trailing Democrats in national and battleground polling, but their financial position tells a very different story ahead of the 2026 US midterm election. The Republican Party’s three national campaign committees entered September with approximately $233.4 million in cash. That was about $103 million more than the roughly $130.4 million available to their Democratic counterparts, according to a CNBC analysis of newly filed Federal Election Commission reports.

The disparity gives Republicans considerable room to support vulnerable candidates, launch late advertising offensives and move money into contests that unexpectedly become competitive during the final weeks.

Republicans hold a major national committee advantage

The largest gap is between the parties’ national organisations. The Republican National Committee ended August with approximately $125.6 million in cash. The Democratic National Committee reported around $16.9 million while also carrying $17.6 million in debt, according to the FEC filings reviewed by CNBC.

That left the RNC with more than seven times the DNC’s available cash. The advantage could prove particularly important because parties now have greater freedom to coordinate their spending with candidates following a June Supreme Court decision that removed certain limits.

The congressional committees present a more balanced picture. The National Republican Congressional Committee held approximately $89.1 million, compared with $75.9 million for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Although the difference is much smaller than the RNC-DNC gap, it still gives House Republicans additional resources while they defend most of the chamber’s closest races.

Donald Trump’s MAGA Inc. adds $416 million

The national committee figures reveal only part of the Republican financial advantage.

President Donald Trump’s main super PAC, MAGA Inc., began September with nearly $416 million available. Two other Trump-linked organisations—No Going Back PAC and Safety & Affordability PAC—had reserved at least $126 million in advertising, according to AdImpact data cited by CNBC.

Combined, Republicans and allied groups had approximately $888 million in advertising planned through Election Day. Democrats and their allies had reserved about $666 million.

Reservations can be changed or cancelled, but the current totals indicate that Republican organisations are positioned to dominate the paid-media race in several key markets.

Democrats retain an advantage in Senate committee cash

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee entered September with approximately $37.6 million, double the $18.7 million held by the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

That number requires context. The NRSC had already spent $50.3 million during August, including roughly $45.9 million in coordinated expenditures. Its cash balance consequently fell from $56.2 million at the end of July.

The lower Republican Senate balance therefore reflects significant early spending rather than fundraising weakness alone.

Democrats also maintain stronger financial positions in some individual battleground campaigns. Candidate-level fundraising can be especially valuable because candidates frequently receive lower advertising rates than super PACs and other outside groups.

Why money matters despite the US Midterm Poll numbers

Republicans are defending 16 of the 21 House contests classified as toss-ups by the Cook Political Report with Amy Walter. They are also defending six of the nine central Senate battlegrounds.

That difficult map places the GOP under considerable pressure even with its financial advantage. Democrats could still benefit from stronger candidates, voter enthusiasm and dissatisfaction with the party controlling Washington.

However, money allows Republicans to remain competitive across a broader range of races. If another seat suddenly moves into toss-up territory, the party can quickly purchase advertising or finance voter outreach without abandoning an existing battleground.

The contrast defines the closing stage of the election: Democrats have encouraging US midterm poll numbers in several races, while Republicans possess the larger national financial reserve. Which advantage matters more will become clearer only when voters cast their ballots.
