US Midterm Elections: Reasons why Republicans lost Ground far beyond swing states. Warning signs were at the gas pump and grocery store

Democrats won control of Congress in the 2026 midterms, putting Donald Trump on the defensive. Voters’ frustration over prices and the Iran war made it harder for Republicans to defend the administration’s record.

US Midterm Elections: Reasons why Republicans lost Ground far beyond swing states. Warning signs were at the gas pump and grocery store

A North Carolina voter told the BBC before Election Day that she was switching from Republican to Democrat. Her reason was simple: Gas and groceries were getting more expensive. One voter can’t explain a national result, but polling cited in the BBC’s analysis shows how widely that frustration was felt. Democrats won control of Congress, and the midterm results exposed Republican weaknesses in places the party usually counts on. Here are five reasons the losses went beyond the usual midterm setback for a president’s party.

1. The cost of living gave voters a reason to switch

U.S. prices rose 3.7% in the year to September, according to figures cited by the BBC. In voter polling, 79% said inflation had caused their families moderate or severe hardship over the previous year. More than six in ten respondents attributed higher-than-usual prices to Trump’s policies. Republicans had to defend an economic record that many voters were judging every time they filled up the car or went to the supermarket.

2. The Iran war made the price problem worse

Fuel prices climbed after Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for U.S. and Israeli military action. The shipping route carries a substantial share of the world’s oil. Its disruption brought the consequences of the war home to American drivers.

Polling cited by the BBC found 63% thought the U.S. had made the wrong decision to take military action. Trump acknowledged after the election that the war had played a role in the defeat. He told Fox News he still believed intervention was necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

3. Democrats made the same issue local

Democrats kept returning to affordability, but candidates had different ways of talking about it. In South Carolina, former pediatrician Annie Andrews put healthcare costs at the center of her upset Senate win. In Georgia, Jon Ossoff paired the cost of living with a focus on corruption and won reelection. Candidates such as James Talarico in Texas and Adam Hamilton in Kansas also spoke openly about their faith. A shared economic message still left room for candidates to sound like themselves.

4. Trump put himself at the center of the midterms

Trump played the main contender for the elections. He urged supporters to vote as if he were on the ballot, but he forgot the surveys that showed his approval rating decline for a few months. He made the appeal to bring out his core voters but the support turned in a different direction. It made people feel that Republican candidates are more closely tied to a president whose approval had weakened, according to the BBC report. Where voters blamed Trump for high prices or opposed the war, making the election about him gave them another reason to vote against his party.

5. Returns in heavily Hispanic and Black counties shifted

A New York Times analysis found that majority-Hispanic counties shifted more than 22 percentage points away from Republican Senate candidates compared with Trump’s 2024 presidential performance. Democrats also won all three House races in heavily Hispanic districts along the Texas–Mexico border. Majority-Black counties moved toward Democrats in Senate races as well.

County returns show how places voted. They can’t establish how individual voters changed their minds or how much of the shift came from turnout.
