US midterm elections 2026: The 2026 US midterm elections may reportedly offer early indications of a possible Democratic wave before midnight. According to NPR, this is due to four congressional districts in Indiana, Kentucky and Florida emerging as crucial races to watch. The districts are important because their results are expected during the first few hours of election night. Indiana and Kentucky will begin reporting results during the 6 pm Eastern Time hour, followed by several Florida congressional races during the 7 pm Eastern Time hour.

Indiana's 5th Congressional District (IN-05)

One of the first Republican-held seats to watch as polls close during the 6 pm Eastern Time hour. It has become more competitive than it was at the beginning of the 2026 election cycle.

In this closely fought contest, Democratic lead could indicate that they are making gains in traditionally Republican territory.

Kentucky's 6th Congressional District (KY-06)

Another early Republican-held district that could provide clues about the election's direction. Democrat Zach Dembo is challenging Republican Ralph Alvarado. A Democratic victory, particularly alongside a competitive result in Indiana, could indicate a difficult election night for Republicans.

Florida's 22nd Congressional District (FL-22)

The district is currently held by a Democrat but has been redrawn to favour Republicans. Its results could reveal whether the political environment is strong enough for Democrats to overcome the Republican advantage created by redistricting. A strong Democratic performance could indicate that Republican gain from redrawn congressional maps are not guaranteed.

Florida's 27th Congressional District (FL-27)

The district is heavily Latino and is another important early indicator. The voting pattern could help explain whether Democrats are regaining support among an important voter group. A strong Democratic performance could indicate a wider shift in voter sentiment in South Florida.

Why can an election night lead change?

A candidate may lead while results from favorable areas come in. The lead can shrink once other areas report. A shift in the tally alone is not evidence of wrongdoing. It means the earlier total was incomplete.
