US Justice Department may appoint special counsel if Donald Trump runs in for 2024 Presidential election. Here's why
The Justice Department has discussed whether a Trump candidacy would create the need for a special counsel. The team has specifically discussed November 14 as an ideal launch date for his campaign.

In the weeks preceding the mid-term election, the Justice Department refrained from overtly political actions. Investigators have been busy issuing grand jury summonses and subsequent court writs to seek testimony in both the investigation into Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election and the investigation into his alleged mismanagement of national security papers stored at Mar-a-lago.
Now federal investigators plan post-election Trump-related action. Indictments of Trump's associates could be tricky if he runs for president. "They can crank up charges on nearly everyone if they want to," said a defence attorney working on January 6-related matters.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is examining Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia and intends to finish by the end of the year. It would be politically devastating to indict a presidential candidate. Justice Department officials have argued whether doing so would safeguard the department from allegations that the administration of the current president is targeting his political opponent.
Special counsels are politically vulnerable. Both Robert Mueller's Russia inquiry and John Durham's investigation into the FBI's Russia investigations were heavily criticized.
