US Government shutdown sparks rumors, but US-Canada border remains operational

Hours following the US government shutdown on Wednesday, fueled by a deadlock between Democrats and Republicans over federal spending, rumors arose in regard to a potential closure of the US-Canada border.

Search activity regarding a border shutdown surged shortly following the government closure, showing public concern in possible disruptions. However, there have been no official announcements suggesting that the boundary between the two North American nations is closed.

The confusion seems to come from a separate challenge: a system outage that disrupted the movement of commercial trucks on the US-Canada border.

CBSA System Outage

The system failure affected the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) on Tuesday morning local time, resulting in delays of commercial processing, mainly at Southern Ontario ports of entry, Canadian outlet CityNews reported. The outage was partly solved as of 1:45 pm local time on Tuesday.

Passenger and non-commercial traffic between the US and Canada remained mostly unaffected. Nevertheless, the interruption drew criticism from the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA), which accused the CBSA of "neglecting" the IT systems.

"The outages continue to increase significantly in frequency and duration and are highly disruptive to carriers and their customers during this sluggish freight economy, which cannot afford any delay costs," the CTA cited. CTA President Stephen Laskowski mentioned, "Although the outages over the last few weeks have been very significant, this matter has been an ongoing issue for many years. Trade between the United States and Canada is regularly brought to a halt because Ottawa has failed to address outdated systems used to process shipments. Today, the entire northern border has come to a standstill because of that neglect."

Border Traffic Statistics

As per the CBSA data, Canadian border services authorities handle a daily flow of approximately 400,000 people and billions of dollars in goods and services. In 2024, CBSA reported processing 4.5 million trucks entering Canada, almost 12,328 trucks per day.
