US government shutdown 2024 update: Is it happening before November 5 US presidential polls?

US election 2024 between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are witnessing several economic factors being discussed and debated. These factors include US fed rate cut, employment rate, possible recession and the apprehensions about the federal government shutdown.

However, Congressional leaders announced an agreement on a short-term spending bill that will fund federal agencies for about three months, averting a possible partial government shutdown when the new budget year begins October 1 and pushing final decisions until after the November 5 election.

Temporary spending bills generally fund agencies at current levels, but an additional $231 million was included to bolster the Secret Service after the two assassination attempts against Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, and additional money was added to aid with the presidential transition, among other things.

Lawmakers have struggled to get to this point as the current budget year winds to a close at month's end. At the urging of the most conservative members of his conference, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., had linked temporary funding with a mandate that would have compelled states to require proof of citizenship when people register to vote.

Government funding expires at the end of September, and with Congress nowhere near an agreement on a full-year budget, a stopgap measure -- known as a "continuing resolution" (CR) -- was widely expected.

However, Republicans had demanded for weeks that any extension of funds be linked to new requirements that voters prove their American citizenship, a push motivated by Donald Trump's unfounded claims of widespread fraud in US elections.

A vote on a bill combining the voting provisions with a six-month funding extension failed on Wednesday in the Republican-controlled House.

The deal announced Sunday excludes the voting provisions and extends funding only until December 20.

That still pushes the funding debate until well after the November 5 election, in which control of the House, Senate and presidency are expected to be decided by thin margins.

The next Congress is seated shortly after the New Year, while the inauguration of the next president -- Republican Trump or Democrat Kamala Harris -- takes place on January 20.
