Gas prices in the US are going up and getting close to $5 per gallon on May 5. Right now, only nine states have gas prices at $4 or less, which shows fuel is very expensive in most places, according to a USA Today report.

The average gas price in the country is now $4.48 per gallon on May 5. It was $4.17 just one week before on April 28, as per AAA. Experts say prices may stay high because of problems around the world, like tensions between the US and Iran that affect oil supply.

Patrick De Haan from GasBuddy said some people in the Midwest may get a little relief for a short time. But overall, gas prices may stay high if global tensions continue. He also said states like Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, and Wisconsin could see small price drops for a week or more. Some parts of Canada, like Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Alberta, may also see slight drops, as reported by USA Today.

Now, here are the 10 US states with the cheapest gas prices as of May 5, as noted by USA Today:

Oklahoma

Oklahoma has the lowest gas price in the country at $3.89 per gallon on May 5. This is still a big jump from $3.57 last week on April 28, showing prices are rising even in the cheapest state, as per the report by USA Today.

Georgia

Georgia has an average gas price of $3.91 per gallon, up from $3.65 a week earlier. Even though prices are rising, it remains one of the most affordable states for fuel.
