The vice president was able to gain an advantage over her rival and her predecessor, President Joe Biden, early in her campaign. The division between voters aged 18 to 34 was much closer in a Biden-Trump contest, with 53% of them supporting Biden and 47% supporting Trump. According to a Generation Lab poll released last month, the same group was split 60 per cent for Harris and 40 per cent for Trump in a race between the two candidates, giving Harris a 20-point lead. The distance between Trump and Harris has only widened since then.
Before Harris was even declared the winner, her campaign garnered grassroots support online thanks to memes and fan edits made and shared by adolescent internet users who started urging Joe Biden to withdraw from the contest. If Harris is successful in addressing their policy concerns, she may be able to gain ground with this group and experience a surge in the polls.
