US Election Results: Will Georgia’s 4 million early ballots help Kamala Harris win the polls?

As Election Day progresses in the US, Georgia has reported a substantial turnout, with more than 4 million ballots cast during the early voting period.

As US Election Day unfolds, Georgia has already seen a significant portion of its electorate cast their votes, with over 4 million ballots submitted during the early voting period from October 15 to November 1.

This impressive turnout accounts for 55.5% of the state’s active voters, according to data from Georgia’s Election Data Hub, marking Georgia as a critical battleground with significant early engagement, as mentioned in the report by Fox News.

The tight race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump has intensified both campaigns’ focus on the state, which President Biden narrowly won in 2020.

Gender Gap in Voting Patterns: Women Lead Early Ballots

One prominent feature of Georgia's early voting data is a distinct gender gap. Female voters have turned out in greater numbers than male voters, with women constituting 56% of early ballots.

The Harris campaign views this trend favorably, particularly as Democratic messaging has emphasized issues such as reproductive rights, following the reversal of Roe v. Wade in 2022.

Trump's recent campaign appeals to women have highlighted pledges to "protect women" and address concerns about immigration.

For Black voters in particular, this gender gap widens further, with 62.1% of early Black voters being women. Given that Black voters—and Black women, in particular—traditionally lean Democratic, this turnout pattern may suggest advantages for Harris.

Meanwhile, Trump’s outreach to Black male voters has focused on promises of economic opportunity, hoping to build traction among this demographic.

Racial Demographics of Early Voters: White Voters Lead, Followed by Black Voters
Racial demographics of early voters show that White voters make up the majority, at 58% of those who have cast ballots, followed by Black voters at 26.4%. Hispanic and Asian voters combined constitute about 6% of the early voting pool. Despite Black Georgians accounting for roughly a third of the state’s population, only 49.7% of active Black voters had cast early ballots compared to 63% of active White voters.

This turnout pattern aligns with previous voting data, where rural counties—traditionally more conservative and predominantly White—have experienced robust early voting participation. In contrast, while the densely populated, Democratic-leaning counties around Atlanta may show lower percentages of early turnout, they have delivered significantly higher total numbers of ballots cast.

Regional Voting Trends: Rural vs. Urban Counties

Early voting patterns in Georgia reveal higher engagement in rural counties, which are generally more conservative. These areas, which largely supported Trump in the 2020 election, show high early turnout. The top 20 counties for voter turnout percentages are all rural and were won by Trump in 2020.

However, counties in the Atlanta metro area, including Fulton, Cobb, and Henry, collectively contributed over 861,000 early ballots, illustrating their strong role in Georgia's electoral outcome. While rural areas report a higher percentage of active voters casting ballots, Atlanta’s population-dense regions contribute a substantial portion of total votes.

New Voters in 2024: 830,000 Ballots from Those Who Skipped 2020

An intriguing aspect of Georgia's early voting data is the high number of voters who did not participate in the 2020 election.

About 830,000 early voters this cycle did not cast ballots in 2020, constituting approximately 21% of all early voters in the state.

Nearly half of these new voters are White, and a quarter are Black. Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones has speculated that many of these voters may be Trump supporters who voted in 2016 but abstained in 2020.

Still, the majority of early voters this year also participated in early voting during the previous election cycle, suggesting consistent voter engagement among early voters.
