US election 2024 results: Closest modern presidential election between Trump and Harris as polls reveal electoral count

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump's hotly contested race to the White House may turn out to be the closest modern U.S. presidential election, according to picture emerged in the recent New York Times/Siena College post-debate polls in the battlegrounds.

Vice President Kamala Harris led among likely voters by one percentage point in Michigan, two points in Wisconsin and nine points in Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District. Former President Donald Trump led in Ohio by 6 points among likely voters, 50 per cent to 44 per cent. The Republican nominee won the state by 8 points in 2020.

According to the latest Times/Siena polls in every key state, the count in the Electoral College stands at Democratic Presidential nominee Kamala Harris -- 270, Republican candidate Donald Trump -- 268.


In each of 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020, a candidate led by at least a few points in enough states to make one candidate a material, if not overwhelming, favorite. As Hillary Clinton can attest, a modest but clear lead is not a guarantee of victory. But here, neither Harris nor Trump can claim even that, as per a report on NYT News Service.

In six battleground states -- Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Carolina, Georgia, and Arizona -- across the US, it's tight contest between Harris and Trump, according to the latest Times/Siena poll.
