Significance of the Electoral Count Reform Act
Congress has recently passed the Electoral Count Reform Act in response to the attempt of former US president Donald Trump to overturn the results of the 2020 election to reverse his loss. Leaders of both parties have claimed that it will act as a protective shield for the future election. However, there are still holes at the local levels that can be exploited. Local officials have already tested a few holes, including as per Matthew Seligman refusing to certify elections at the county level. Matthew Seligman is a fellow of the Constitutional Law Center of Stanford, and he has co-authored the book How to Steal a Presidential Election, as per USA TODAY.Also Read : La Nina 2024 USA: Check winter weather forecast, predictions
Matthew Seligman shared with USA TODAY that the changes in the Electoral Count Reform Act have led to discussions to grant local election boards greater authority in the certification process, but the proponents argue that this could enhance local oversight as well as it may open the door for partisan manipulation. The efforts are now shifting to get the county boards of elections and then state-level boards of elections to possess some kind of authority who will refuse to certify the results regarding elections, USA Today reported.
Procedural changes in vote counting
After US President Joe Biden won the US presidential election in 2020, Republican nominee Donald Trump tried to convince the Republican members of Congress and vice president Mike Pence to refuse the count of the electoral votes. The Electoral Count Reform Act approached in a more difficult way. It also clarifies the role of the vice president regarding vote counting, which is ceremonial, as well as reflects the number of votes that Congress is required to object to the results of the election. Also Read : Will Donald Trump use the military to suppress the Radical Left?
