Former US President Donald Trump has been summoned to appear before a US congressional committee probing last year's Capitol brawl. US Representative Bennie Thompson has stated that Trump must account for his conduct.

Trump may face criminal penalties and jail if he does not cooperate with the summons, also called a subpoena. The select committee investigates Trump supporters storming Congress on January 6, 2021.

On Thursday, the panel's seven Democrats and two Republicans agreed to issue the subpoena requiring the former Republican President to give papers and testimony under oath in connection with the Capitol disturbance. The subpoena is expected to be issued in the coming days, with a deadline for Trump's compliance.


US Representative Liz Cheney, the committee's vice-chairwoman, stated that they were required to get answers straight from the guy who set this all in motion. And every American has the right to know the answers.

The committee said Thursday that it will focus on Mr. Trump's mental state as he refuses to concede a loss to US President Joe Biden in the November 2020 presidential race. The former president, who has denounced the inquiry as a farce designed to deflect attention away from the failings of the Democratic government, is widely expected to refuse to testify and fight the subpoena.

In a 14-page letter in response to the subpoena, he accused the committee of failing to examine his charges of election fraud.
