US attorney general names special counsel to oversee Donald Trump’s DOJ probes
Donald Trump's troubles continue after he announced his presidential bid for 2024 with the DOJ appointing a special counsel to oversee investigations into the Capitol riot on January 6th, 2021, and the Mar-a-Lago raid for confidential documents re...

While Trump announced his presidential re-election bid on Thursday, Attorney General Merrick Garland on Friday appointed veteran prosecutor Jack Smith as special counsel for DOJ investigations into two incidents involving the former US President. DOJ has debated whether they should appoint counsels for many days and decided to go ahead. Now, it is up to special counsel Jack Smith to determine if Donald Trump should be prosecuted.
Trump has argued that the DOJ investigations were politically motivated and described the actions as the weaponization of the justice system.
Trump's team worries that both investigations would drag on the ex-President's time and come up with millions of dollars in fines and perhaps even a jail term. The instigation of Trump to his supporters to override the election committee's declaration of the January elections and raid the White House might even call upon the President being hauled to jail if proven. Several witnesses among Trump's loyal followers have been lined up to testify against him.
Meanwhile, the Republican Party has also vowed to investigate US President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden's dealings. Hunter Biden is under Federal watch, but no charges have yet been put on record against him. Hunter Biden is accused of human trafficking and making money in illegal dealings that run into millions of dollars while Biden was Vice President and continued after he became President.
