US attorney general names special counsel to oversee Donald Trump’s DOJ probes

The DOJ investigations into the Capitol attack of January 6, 2021, by Trump supporters and the raid by the FBI on his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida for classified documents, will be overseen by a special counsel, as informed by a senior Justice Department official. It is to mention that Trump had recently announced his Presidential bid for 2024 and would be contesting US President Joe Biden again.

While Trump announced his presidential re-election bid on Thursday, Attorney General Merrick Garland on Friday appointed veteran prosecutor Jack Smith as special counsel for DOJ investigations into two incidents involving the former US President. DOJ has debated whether they should appoint counsels for many days and decided to go ahead. Now, it is up to special counsel Jack Smith to determine if Donald Trump should be prosecuted.




Trump has argued that the DOJ investigations were politically motivated and described the actions as the weaponization of the justice system.
