US Air Force partners with MITRE to launch e-sport tournament to help servicemen

US Air Force will use MITRE-designed video games to help servicemen get better prepared for real-life combat. It will launch an e-sport tournament.

US Air Force will partner with a nonprofit national security company, MITRE to launch an esports tournament that may help servicemen better prepare for complex combat situations. MITRE claims that the tournament may also help the service men "better understand mission logistics choices and prioritization while under attack." The game has been named 'Drone Guardians'. The participants in this game are required to defend a deployed airfield from enemy attacks while maintaining the ability to launch aircraft missions.

MITRE video games for real-life combat situations

Players will have to confront a wide range of attacks from land, air, sea, space, or cyberattacks. Sometimes, they all may come together. Participants will have to prioritize the area to defend while still keeping the airfield running for combat sorties.

Explaining the game, MITRE has said on its website,

"Teams must make critical mission decisions such as whether to prioritize readying aircraft for launch over defending the air base or putting together a contested logistics strategy in order to ensure they have the supplies they need to complete the mission."

Earlier video games for servicemen

It is not the first time that the US military will use video games to help its servicemen tackle difficult situations. Earlier, it used a 1993 Super Nintendo game that was designed to help the Army train soldiers for marksmanship. According to Military.com, the US Army later partnered with Raytheon to create a virtual reality combat simulator capable of tracking a soldier's whole-body movements.

The registration has been opened

In the meantime, MITRE has also opened registration for its eSports tournament, GameX: Mission Generation Under Attack. Participants in this game will have to prove their gaming skills and earn prize money.
