In the 57th minute, Uruguayan footballer Darwin Nunez was taken down by Ghana's defender Daniel Amartey inside the box. Siebert signalled players to continue the game, but he was later told by VAR to review his decision. However, the German referee refused to overturn his call.
Later, after the match ended and Uruguay was knocked out of the tournament, Edinson Cavani and Jose Maria Gimenez were shown yellow cards for their post-match protest. Both the Uruguayan players were seen harassing Siebert. Uruguayan star Luis Suarez was seen in tears after the match, as it could be his last world cup.
Meanwhile, after defeating Portugal, South Korea was able to secure a spot for itself in the last 16. South Korea defeated Portugal 2-1. Nonetheless, Portugal has also advanced to the next stage despite suffering a loss against South Korea. Portugal, South Korea, Uruguay, and Ghana are in Group H.
