UPS issued a statement confirming the incident:
“At approximately 5:20 PM ET tonight, UPS Flight 2976 from Louisville, KY, to Honolulu, an MD-11 with three crewmembers onboard, was involved in an accident in Louisville.”
As of now, seven people have died, and at least 11 are injured in the crash. Video from the scene shows flames and smoke rising from the crash site near Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport.
Local news outlet WDRB reported that emergency crews responded to multiple calls of an explosion near Fern Valley Road and Grade Lane, close to the airport’s perimeter. Louisville Metro Police confirmed an active scene with visible fire and debris scattered across the area.
Spokesperson Matt Sanders stated: “The incident involved a plane crash with injuries and more than 20 calls for service.”
The MD-11 involved in the crash is a wide-body, long-haul cargo aircraft known for its large payload capacity and intercontinental range, commonly used by major cargo operators including UPS, FedEx, and Lufthansa Cargo.
