The University of Virginia has cancelled its final home football game following a mass shooting wherein three players were killed, and two others suffered injuries. The now-cancelled match between the Virginia Cavalier and Coastal Carolina was originally scheduled for November 19.
As per the university and police officials, 22-year-old Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. joined a group of around two dozen others for a field trip on November 13. The authorities said the suspect opened fire on the group after returning to the campus, killing three players - D'Sean Perry, Lavel Davis Jr, and Devin Chandler. Besides, he injured two more people, including footballer Mike Hollins.
Hollins' mother said that her son was still unaware of the deaths of his friends and teammates. The incident caused days of mourning in the state's flagship public university, and classes resumed only on November 16. Jim Ryan, the university president, stated that the officials did not know the motive behind the mass shooting.
