Among the Weta tools now entering public beta through the new division are enhancements for Wig 1.0, a tool for hair and fur creation in Autodesk Maya; Eddy 3.0, used to process volumetric effects like smoke or fire in Nuke; and Deep Compositing, which introduces depth to composition tools within Nuke.Timoni West, Vice President of Unity Weta Tools, in conversation with The Verge said that until now, these tools were part of a proprietary pipeline exclusive to Weta. He further added that now, they're accessible to a wider audience.
To provide context, numerous major studios in both the film and gaming sectors have crafted specialized proprietary tools to facilitate their project development. Prominent examples include Pixar's utilization of the RenderMan 3D rendering engine software for "Toy Story" and Weta's award-winning toolset for simulating water in "Avatar: Way of the Water." Timoni West, Vice President of Unity Weta Tools, emphasized that these tools are battle-tested, having been employed in previous productions. The goal is to extend their availability to a broader audience, thereby enhancing production efficiency.
Unity is expanding the Unity Weta Tools suite to encompass updated versions of its existing applications. Among these are Ziva, employed to animate soft tissue such as human faces and moving animals, and SpeedTree, instrumental in generating environmental foliage and trees. Unity envisions that these tools will enable other studios to expedite production timelines and achieve higher-quality outcomes. The inclusion of Wig software is particularly noteworthy, given Weta's prowess in simulating hair and fur in computer graphics, as demonstrated in acclaimed films like "King Kong" (2005) and "The Jungle Book" (2016).
Timoni West expressed the rationale behind this initiative, noting how teams with limited resources are striving to create exceptional movies and video games. She cited "Everything Everywhere All At Once" as an illustrative case of a remarkable film created by a small team. West believes that such projects could have been further enhanced with the tools offered by Unity, allowing for more efficient and effective production.
Unity's Engine has found applications beyond game development, encompassing industries like VR, animation, movie effects, automotive, and architecture. As a result, a wide array of studios can benefit from these tools. Unity's commitment to enhancing accessibility in 3D production is evident through its participation in the Alliance for OpenUSD's initiative to standardize 3D content.
