Tech company and video engine Unity has introduced a significant change to its pricing model, wherein developers will be charged a fixed rate based on the number of installations of their games, regardless of whether those installations are linked to a sale. This new fee system is scheduled to take effect at the beginning of 2024, according to reports.

Unity has unveiled its plans to implement a pay-per-download pricing structure starting January 1, 2024. Under this scheme, developers using Unity software will incur a flat fee each time a game utilizing Unity technology is installed.

Following the announcement, Unity has been working to clarify the details of this pricing adjustment, as it triggered widespread frustration within the game development community. These fees, according to Unity, are deemed essential for supporting the continued development of their technology. However, many game developers are now concerned that achieving success with a Unity-powered game may result in higher costs than profits.

Under Unity's new approach, developers utilizing the free tier of Unity's development services will be required to pay Unity $0.20 per installation once their game surpasses thresholds of 200,000 downloads and generates $200,000 in revenue. For developers subscribing to a Unity Pro plan costing over $2,000 annually, they will need to reach higher thresholds but will be subject to lower fees.
