United Airlines is offering free flight changes amid Newark Airport chaos
United Airlines is letting travellers change Newark flights for free after major delays, cancellations, and safety concerns caused by air traffic control failures and staff shortages. A critical radar outage left planes briefly flying blind, promp...

Travellers with flights scheduled between May 7 and May 17 can get it rescheduled without paying change fees or fare differences, provided tickets were purchased on or before May 4. This ‘flexibility’ waiver applies to new bookings in the same cabin and between cities—including Philadelphia and New York—within two days before or after the original dates.
As per the ABC news report, this is United’s second waiver in recent weeks. A previous waiver covered tickets purchased by April 29 for travel between May 1 and May 5.
Airline responds to air traffic control crisis
Reportedly, the move came after chaos at Newark where United has already cut about 35 daily flights since May 3. The problems are stemming from severe air traffic control (ATC) staff shortages and a critical equipment outage at Philadelphia TRACON, the radar system guiding flights into Newark. Also Read: Disney's maiden theme park in Middle East to be built on Abu Dhabi's Yas Island. This outage forced the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to temporarily halt departures to the airport, which resulted in the cancellation of nearly 900 flights.
Hundreds of flights cancelled, safety fears raised
Traian Hernandez, a retired air traffic controller, said it is unsafe and explained that even a 90-second radar failure is an eternity in aviation since planes can cross entire airspace zones within the time.US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy acknowledged a communications loss lasting at least 30 seconds, while others including New York Senator Chuck Schumer warned the system’s vulnerability could have catastrophic consequences.
Some of the air traffic controllers are now on trauma leave because of overwhelming workloads, which has exacerbated the already thin staffing levels.
FAA scrambles to address staff shortages, outdated systems
The FAA acknowledged that its ‘antiquated’ air traffic systems are partly to blame. They promised to modernise telecommunications and automation systems, and import ATC supervisors from elsewhere in the country. However, they cautioned that replacing and training new controllers will take time.In the meantime, experts urge travellers to steer clear of Newark if possible. Hernandez suggested taking alternative airports such as JFK or LaGuardia until things get better.
