Unhappy Christmas, New Year? Americans are tired of nation's current economic trajectory, leaders and future, reveal latest polls

As the year 2022 comes to an end, the majority of Americans are preparing for an Unhappy new year. According to USA Today/Suffolk universities latest poll, two third of the correspondents believe that the country has gotten off on the wrong track. The poll shows little confidence in either political party or any branch of government to constructively address the challenges that lie ahead.

Their concern for president Joe Biden and the new Congress for 2023 is very clear : inflation and the economy, which have been chosen as their No.1 or No.2 issue by a massive 54% majority as per the survey.This is twice the number for any other issue.

Janet Brown, a republican who works as a mortgage broker in Petaluma, California said “ I’m hopeful,but I'm also doubtful”.Inflation has taken a toll even as the gas prices have been declining. Brown,66,explained “My power bill is about 600$ a month; that used to be half of that.”Brown further elaborated the problem by mentioning prices of raw food items as well."Meat's way up; chicken's up; everything's up, up, up. If you're on fixed income, you know, I just don't know what some people do."said Brown.


Democrat Peter Grant, who owns a small marine business in Waldoboro, Maine described himself as “weary”.In a follow up interview after participating in the poll,Grant, 62,predicted “we’re in for some tumultuous times” .



David Paleologos,director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center said “ When the three branches of government are viewed negatively, it signals that voters are looking for something new or better, be it structurally or politically,".

However there are those who are hopeful about the coming year as well.Rachel Naegli, 53, a nurse practitioner and a Democrat from Manvel,Texas, thinks there could be a turnaround in 2023."I'm hopeful that the last couple of years and giant amount of negative things that have happened have been a wake-up call, and that it is possible to learn from those things and move forward," she said.Other Important problems she mentioned include racism, gun violence and reproductive rights. "Perhaps the rose-colored glasses have been pulled off."
