UMass Lowell shooter: Lowell police are actively searching for an armed man reported on the campus of UMass Lowell on Wednesday, prompting officials to urge everyone on campus to stay indoors until further notice, as per a report.

Ongoing Search for Armed Man at UMass Lowell Campus

Sky5 aerial footage showed a strong police presence, with officers from multiple agencies working around UMass Lowell’s South Campus, as per a WCVB report.

According to emergency alerts sent to the campus community, authorities are looking "for a 5-foot-5 Asian male wearing a gray or white sweatshirt and black shorts carrying a long weapon. Seen in the rear of Riverview Suites," as quoted in the report.


Riverview Suites is a dorm which is located on Middlesex Street, according to WCVB report. Lowell police shared that the police activity was also extending to the areas of Pawtucket and Broadway streets, as per the report.

Campus-Wide Shelter in Place Ordered

University officials said that, "Police from UMass Lowell and the city of Lowell were alerted this afternoon to reports of a male on South Campus carrying an object suspected of being a firearm. A campus-wide shelter in place order has been issued as officers attempt to find this individual," as quoted by WCVB.

State and Federal Agencies Join the Search

Lowell Mayor Daniel Rourke also confirmed that Massachusetts State Police and FBI officials are providing support, saying that, "The City is utilizing all available resources at this time," as reported by WCVB.

Massachusetts State Police also acknowledged that a video circulating online appears to show someone with a weapon walking near the Riverview Suites residence hall, according to NBC Boston report. The police also asked anyone with information to call 911.

Rep. Lori Trahan said on a social media post that she was monitoring the situation, "I'm actively monitoring the alert of a potentially armed individual near UMass Lowell’s South Campus and in touch with local officials. If you are in Lowell, please follow directions from Lowell Police Department (Official) and UMass Lowell," as quoted by NBC Boston.
