Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visits Kherson after Russian withdrawal

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Kherson city and his troops after the Russians pulled out of the city. He now hopes for peace in Ukraine and that Kherson signals the war's end. When a reporter asked Zelensky where he would be going from Kherson, the President replied not to Moscow, as Ukrainians didn't want a part of another country.

Zelensky joked that he was in Kherson because he wanted a 'watermelon', a famous fruit grown there. Russia annexed Kherson within weeks of the conflict beginning, and the withdrawal has spelt hope for the Ukrainians who want peace. More than 400 war crimes have been identified in the area, and Zelensky's team are taking that up with the UN.

Zelensky was full of praise of NATO and especially the USA for their help with the HIMAR missiles. According to him, the missiles changed the war's course and proved highly effective against the Russian forces.




Russia, on its part, has said that they have just withdrawn from Kherson, but that territory belongs to the Russian Federation. For any peace talks, the issue of territory belonging to Russia was not negotiable.

People in Kherson shed tears of joy at having their army re-occupy the place. Many were meeting after months of separation with their family and loved ones.
Zelensky sang the national anthem with the crowd, and the Ukrainian flag was hoisted in the administrative building.
