A Mirage 2000 fighter of the Ukrainian Air Force crashed in the northwestern part of the country in Volyn Oblast on Tuesday (July 22). The crashed jet's pilot ejected and survived, the Ukrainian Air Force said while adding that the accident took place during a training mission.

The area where the Mirage 2000 fighter, supplied by France, crashed is far away from the Russian frontlines. The Russian and Ukrainian forces are battling it out in the eastern and southeastern parts of the country.

The Ukrainian Air Force posted details of the crash on its Telegram channel stating the Mirage 2000 jet faced an equipment failure. "On the evening of July 22, 2025, while performing a flight mission on a Mirage-2000 fighter, aviation equipment failed, which the pilot reported to the flight director," the statement translated by Google from Ukrainian to English read.


"Then the pilot acted competently, as it should be in crisis situations, and successfully ejected. The search and rescue team found the pilot, his condition is stable. There were no casualties on the ground. A special commission has been appointed to establish the causes of the aviation accident," it added.

Western fighters in Ukrainian Air Force

The French built Mirage 2000, a fourth generation combat aircraft, is the second western fighter with the Ukrainian Air Force after the United States of America-made F-16 Fighting Falcon. However, the F-16s supplied to Ukraine were not by the US, but by its NATO partners - The Netherlands, Denmark and Norway.

When French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu stated that his country was providing the Mirage 2000 jets to Ukraine to fight against Russia, he had not mentioned the number of fighters. But multiple French and Ukrainian media reports claimed that France was sending six Mirage 2000 jets. These claims were based on a French parliamentary report which mentioned that out of the 26 Mirage 2000 jets with the French Air Force, six would be sent to Ukraine

Built primarily for air-to-air combat and dogfights, the Mirage 2000 supplied to Ukraine were modified to carry out air-to-ground operations. The fourth generation fighter, a product of Dassault Aviation, with the Ukrainian Air Force is a single-pilot, multi-role, single-engine combat aircraft. They have nine hard points to carry missiles and bombs along with two 30 mm canons to close aerial combat.

Ukrainian Air Force Mirage 2000 fighters are armed with MBDA Mica air-to-air and Scalp cruise missiles. They can also carry Safran AASM Hammer guided bombs to target Russian military installations and equipment on ground.

Russia, which invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, has claimed that western fighters like F-16 and MIrage 2000 would not have any impact on its war machinery.
