Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy 'heading to the US' to meet Joe Biden amid war with Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that he is en route to the US for a meeting with US President Joe Biden.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine, was traveling to Washington on Wednesday for a meeting with President Joe Biden and to deliver a speech to a joint session of Congress. It will be his first known journey outside of the nation since the beginning of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February.

Taking to Twitter, Zelenskyy wrote, "On my way to the US to strengthen the resilience and defense capabilities of Ukraine. In particular, @POTUS and I will discuss cooperation between Ukraine and USA. I will also have a speech at the Congress and a number of bilateral meetings."


The extremely delicate tour is taking place after 10 months of a horrific war that has resulted in numerous deaths and injuries on both sides of the conflict as well as damage to the Ukrainian people.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement on Tuesday night that President Joe Biden is looking forward to the visit and that the speech to Congress will show strong, bipartisan support for Ukraine.

She added that the trip will demonstrate how steadfastly the US is prepared to help Ukraine for as long as necessary, including by offering financial, humanitarian, and military support.

However, US and Ukrainian officials have made it clear they don't see an immediate end to the war and are gearing up for fighting to last for a while.
