UK police arrest former ambassador Mandelson over Epstein link
British police arrested Peter Mandelson, a former UK ambassador to the US, on Monday over serious allegations. Police suspect he shared confidential government information with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. London’s Metropolitan Police said they arrested a 72-year-old man on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

Police did not officially name Mandelson because UK rules stop them from naming suspects before charges, as stated by NYT. Authorities confirmed the arrested man was a former government minister linked to properties searched in Wiltshire and Camden in London. Mandelson was taken to a London police station for formal questioning after his arrest.

Ambassador job and resignation

He had already been removed from his ambassador job in Washington in September after details of his friendship with Epstein became public. He also resigned from the Labour Party on the same day news came that police were investigating him. Mandelson earlier said US Justice Department documents did not show any wrongdoing by him.

According to Al Jazeera, Mandelson was detained as part of a misconduct investigation connected to Epstein. Authorities reportedly took him from his London home on Sunday. Police again confirmed only that a 72-year-old man was arrested and taken for questioning. Mandelson had been a major Labour Party figure for decades and held the title “Lord.”

Emails reveal close ties

The scandal became bigger after emails from the US Justice Department came out. These emails showed that he was closer to Epstein than people earlier thought. They also showed that when he was a minister in former Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s government, he shared some information with Epstein.

Before giving up his House of Lords seat and his stint with PM Stamer’s party, Madelson had said that he had previously regretted his ties to Epstein. It was different from how Prince Andrew looked at the allegations against him, where King Charl’s brother continued to to maintain that he didn’t do anything wrong.
